If you are traveling out of the country or moving to a new state, you may need to get a health certificate in order to bring your pet with you.

VWCNH Health Certificate Pre-Check Form

To obtain a health certificate, you will likely need to have an accredited veterinarian examine your pet to verify that they are healthy and up to date on their vaccinations.  We’re happy to help with these requirements! What you need will vary based on your destination.

Additionally, some destinations have waiting periods for vaccinations and forms, so it is important to look into your destination’s health certificate requirements ahead of time.  The APHIS website (link below) is a good place to get the process started!

  • Health Certificates are only valid for a limited time depending on the destination.
  • Check the APHIS website for details on your destination’s time-frames and requirements.
  • Certain vaccines and blood tests may be required before travel.
  • Bring all documents on your pet’s health from your current or previous veterinary clinic if we do not regularly care for your pet. This includes the Rabies Certificate!
  • Appointments for Health Certificates may take up to an hour to complete
  • Appointments for Health Certificates may not be available for up to two weeks. We will do our best to accommodate! 
  • If traveling via plane or other company, check their requirements for pet travel as well. There may be additional forms that need to be completed.

Titer Testing for Dogs & Cats

We are proud to offer two forms of vaccination titering at our clinic for our patients…

Distemper Vaccine (Da2pp) Titering

This vaccination titer is recommended and offered to all of our canine patients. When dogs are young pups, they receive up to 3 rounds of the Da2pp vaccination, providing protection against the diseases known as Distemper, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, and Adenovirus. Once a pup has received their recommended vaccines, performing a titer will help your Veterinarian determine if your dog has actually received the amount of antibody levels needed to protect them from these serious diseases. 

Not only does titering this vaccine tell us if your dog is adequately protected, but it can also help your dog avoid unneeded vaccinations. Typically, Da2pp vaccinations are given on a yearly or every three-year schedule, but a titer test showing appropriate antibody levels can help your dog avoid vaccinations until they are needed. 

Rabies Vaccine Titering

Both Cats and Dogs can receive Rabies titering at VWCNH. We use an internationally recognized reference Laboratory in order to perform our Rabies titers, known as The Rabies Laboratory at Kansas State University. Rabies titers, similar to Da2pp titers, will tell us if your pet is adequately protected from the Rabies virus. This test is frequently required by certain nations around the world in order to travel there with your pets. What Is Titer Testing?

Vaccination schedules are designed for population-level protection. But individual animals vary — some build lasting immunity after fewer boosters; others may need more frequent protection. A titer test answers the question directly: is your pet protected right now?

We offer titer testing as an alternative to automatic re-vaccination — when it makes clinical sense. It’s especially useful for pets with prior vaccine reactions, owners who prefer a minimize-intervention approach, and travel requirements that demand documented antibody levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I schedule a health certificate appointment?
At least two weeks before you need the certificate — and longer if your destination has vaccine waiting periods or blood test requirements. Some countries require documentation 30+ days before travel.
Yes. We offer Rabies titer testing through the Rabies Laboratory at Kansas State University. The process requires specific timing relative to your Rabies vaccine date. Call us well in advance and we’ll walk you through the steps. See our Titer Testing page.
We can in many cases, but we’ll need complete vaccination records, especially the official Rabies Certificate. Please bring all documentation from your current or previous veterinary clinic. Call ahead to confirm.
Health certificates are required by most airlines for cabin and cargo travel, but requirements vary by carrier — some have additional forms or breed restrictions. Check your airline’s specific requirements and ask us if there are additional documents needed.
