Nutritional Counseling Management
At VWCNH, our Veterinarians and Staff believe that what your pet eats and maintaining a healthy weight are paramount to your pet having the longest and best quality of life. Our clinic carried multiple brands of Veterinary Prescription diets from Royal Canin, Purina, and Hill’s to ensure that your pet has access to diets that can improve their well-being. These include diets specially designed for Urinary health, Kidney health, Diabetic management, Gastrointestinal health, Allergy management, Joint health, and Overweight management.
In addition to this, every pet that we examine will receive a Body Condition Score- which can help you identify your pet’s current weight health and how to alter it, if necessary. We welcome our patients to visit us on a routine basis for complimentary weight-checks, so we can help you manage any changes to your pet’s diet and weight at every step along the way. Patients that are put on a plan for weight loss, weight gain, or allergy trials will receive regular calls from experienced and educated Veterinary Technicians to consult with owners on their pet’s journey.

My pet seems fine — how do I know if they're overweight?
A Body Condition Score (BCS) gives us a standardized measure beyond just the number on the scale. We assess it at every visit and explain what it means in plain terms. About 60% of dogs and cats in the US are overweight — it’s worth checking.
Do I need an appointment to weigh my pet?
No — we welcome walk-in weight checks at any time during clinic hours. It takes two minutes and helps us track trends between annual visits.
What prescription diets do you carry?
We stock Royal Canin, Purina Pro Plan Veterinary, and Hill’s Prescription diets in-clinic, covering conditions including urinary health, kidney disease, diabetes, gastrointestinal issues, allergies, joint health, and weight management. We can also order additional diets if needed.
Can diet change help my pet's allergies?
Yes, in many cases. Food allergies often present as skin irritation, chronic ear infections, or gastrointestinal symptoms. We use strict elimination diet trials — usually 8–12 weeks — to identify the culprit protein. See our Allergy Testing & Management page for more.

VWCNH does not offer 24-hour emergencies. For overnight monitoring and specialty referrals we partner with our sister facility, Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine in North Haven — open 24/7, 365.
